One of the kindest things you can do is make difficult decisions while they’re still easy.

Many people avoid conversations about Lasting Powers of Attorney, future care or what might happen if they become unable to make decisions.

It’s understandable. None of us likes to imagine a time when we might need help. But planning ahead isn’t about expecting the worst. It’s about making life easier for the people we love.

Imagine your husband, wife, son or daughter trying to make important decisions on your behalf. Would they know:

* how you like your finances managed?
* what matters most to you?
* who you would want involved?
* what you would consider to be a good quality of life?

The greatest gift we can often leave our families isn’t money. It’s clarity.

Clear instructions. Clear wishes. Clear guidance.

When those things exist, families spend less time wondering “What would Mum have wanted?” and more time simply being together.

Planning ahead isn’t about giving up control. It’s about exercising it.

It’s about making your own decisions while you still can, rather than leaving others to make them for you later.

At Wise Hen, we’ve come to believe that the best safeguarding doesn’t begin when someone loses capacity.

It begins much earlier. It begins with conversations. With planning.

And with giving the people who care about us the confidence that, when the time comes, they will be carrying out “our wishes”, not guessing what they might have been.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest acts of kindness we can leave behind.
