When Wise Hen first began to take shape, we thought we were building a service. The more families we spoke to, the more we realised we were really building something else.

A way of thinking.

Over the coming weeks, we’d like to share some of the principles that quietly guide everything we do. Not because we have all the answers. But because these ideas have shaped the way we approach some of life’s most important conversations.

The first is perhaps the simplest.

The person always comes before the assets.

That may sound obvious. Yet it’s surprisingly easy, when conversations turn to Lasting Powers of Attorney, bank accounts or property, for the focus to shift towards money.

Money matters, Homes matter, Savings matter.

But they are never the reason we plan ahead.

The reason we plan ahead is to protect the person.

Their wishes.

Their dignity.

Their independence.

Their relationships.

Their confidence.

Assets exist to support a person’s life, and a person’s life should never become secondary to their assets.

We’ve found that when families keep the individual at the centre of every discussion those decisions become clearer, questions become easier, disagreements often become smaller because everyone is working towards the same goal.

Not preserving wealth at any cost, but preserving the wellbeing, wishes and humanity of someone they love.

For us, that simple principle has become the foundation upon which everything else is built.

Perhaps it is worth asking ourselves, whenever difficult decisions arise:

“Are we protecting the assets… or are we protecting the person?”

Sometimes, the answer changes everything.
